Latest Everio touches down.
With the blossoming of High Definition on consumer camcorders onboard storage has had to skyrocket to keep up and JVC’s latest has a hard drive that would do a budget notebook proud.
Unveiled at the butt end of last week, the ‘Everio GZ-HD3’ offers a massive 60 gigabytes of internal storage but arguably wastes much of this because it records in the bloated and ageing Mpeg2 format.
Video at the odd resolution of 1440 x 1080 is its bread and butter but the remarkably low record time of just five hours goes to show it isn’t the standard you record in, it’s the codec you use. Consequently if 60GB isn’t enough (and incredibly it might not be) then there is also a space for SDHC memory cards. Not that this is likely to do you too much good with SDHC cards topping out at 8GB you’ll get a mere 40 minutes of extra record time of the industry’s latest and most capacious.
Anyway, this shocker aside, the GZ-HD3 features a widescreen LCD, 10x optical zoom and 3 CCDs (though their size wasn’t disclosed) while all other specs were kept under wraps.
A shipping date also remains a mystery and despite the reasonable $1,200 RRP, the GZ-HD3 is likely to cost you a sight more in memory cards and extra hard drives down the line…
