Jon Stewart signs with HBO to produce ‘short-form digital content’

Former Daily Show host Jon Stewart’s return to screens will come via HBO, but viewers are more likely to be tuning in on mobile devices rather than their TV sets.

Stewart’s deal with the network will see him produce “timely short-form digital content” for the HBO Now and HBO Go streaming and on-demand platforms.

The exclusive four-year deal will see content from Stewart posted and updated multiple times a day in collaboration with cloud graphics company OTOY.

The prospect of bite-sized chunks from Stewart could potentially change the paradigm for current events-based comedy programming.

After presenting a 22-minute show four nights a week for 16 years, it looks like Stewart will be offering more instant reaction to goings-on around the globe.

With programming for the Snapchat generation, if you will, viewers will be able to catch up with Stewart multiple times a day on their mobile devices.

“Appearing on television 22 minutes a night clearly broke me. I’m pretty sure I can produce a few minutes of content every now and again,” Stewart joked.

There’s no news yet on when the content will premiere, but by bringing Stewart aboard and offering his content through digital-only platforms, HBO is further-lessening the need for a cable subscription in order to enjoy premium programming.

This year the company unbundled its content from cable and satellite subscriptions for the first time, with the HBO Now streaming service which is available for $15.99 a month.
