Not one to sit on the success of past products, Jawbone is back with a new, high-end fitness tracker, the Jawbone UP3.
Big brother to the hugely successful Jawbone UP24 – one of our favourite wearables to date – the Jawbone UP3 adds a new tri-axis accelerometer and a collection of bioimpedance sensors to a wristband no bigger than its predecessor.
With skin and ambient temperature sensors also thrown in for good measure, the UP3 has the ability to offer feedback on a mass of new metrics and wellbeing criteria.
Jawbone UP3 Features
One such new feature is your heart rate. With a mass of devices from the Adidas miCoach Smart Run to the Samsung Galaxy S5 now all offering inbuilt heart rate sensors, Jawbone has joined the party.
Unlike many current devices, however, the Jawbone UP3 has shunned a bulky and expensive optical heart rate sensor in favour of its svelte, unobtrusive collection of bioimpedance sensors. These small metal sensors sit on the inside of the UP3’s wrist band, keeping tabs on your body’s small fluctuations.
Further benefits of this sensor pack include the ability to better track sleep. Already one of the UP24’s key selling points, the UP3 can now differentiate between sleep stages. Relaying all data via Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy to your synced smartphone, the UP3’s app will visualise you’re night’s transition through light, deep and REM sleep.

On-demand heart rate readings will be one such update. At launch, the UP3 will only offer resting heart rate readings, automatically taken in the mornings.
This data, along with all other collected metrics, will help form the base of the device’s new Smart Coach. Part of the new accompanying app, the Smart Coach feature will utilise this top-line data to offer personalised guidance on how to hit desired goals, be it activity, sleep or health based.
Jawbone UP3 Release Date and Price
Although an exact Jawbone UP3 release date has yet to be confirmed, the American manufacturer has revealed the device will hit retailers ‘this winter’.
For those after the new features, the UP3, which is waterproof to 10 metres and will survive a week on a single charge, has been priced at £149.99. This is £50 more than the UP24.
