Jawbone UP2, UP3 and UP4 now know when you nod off to sleep

Jawbone has announced a major firmware update for its most recent array of fitness trackers, while also introducing a new range of colours and styles.

Now the UP2, UP3 and UP4 will automatically be able to tell when users drop off, which means no more tapping the band to switch activity to sleep mode.

When they wake in the morning, the fitness trackers will also be aware and switch back to daytime mode.

Another important addition makes better use of the heart rate monitor within the UP3 and UP4 (a US only model that allows for mobile payments through AmEx).

Instead of only giving users their resting heart rate first thing in the morning, the sensor will now take passive heart rate readings throughout the day when the wearer is still.

This will make it easier to make comparisons when wearers are relaxing at home, stressed at work, drinking coffee, etc.

The new firmware update for iOS and Android will roll out to all Jawbone UP app users from today. Jawbone is also releasing its devices in a lot more colours and band styles, which are available to buy now.

The updates come at an apt time for Jawbone, which has suffered to reproduce the form it showed with the Jawbone UP24 and has fallen behind somewhat in the wearables space.

The UP3 was delayed for months after the company was unable to find a way to live up to its desire to waterproof the device for swimming.
