Are we looking at HTC’s next smartphone?

The HTC One M9 isn’t grabbing headlines anymore, so everyone’s keen to find out what the Taiwanese tech giant has lined up for its next release.

Fortunately, a new leak has revealed a possible contender for HTC’s next smartphone – and it’s an addition to the company’s Desire series.

A mystery handset has been spotted on TENAA, China’s electronics certification agency, as revealed by Times News.

According to the certification profile, HTC has a smartphone codenamed “HTC D728w” under wraps – it’s expected to adopt a more formal HTC Desire 728 branding upon release.

Certification usually means that smartphones are nearly ready to launch, so we could see the 728 – if it exists – being released at any point from now.

So what can we expect to see from the Desire 728? Well fortunately, this isn’t the first leak we’ve seen about HTC’s next mid-range smartphone.

Previous rumours suggest a 5.5in display with an HD resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels, which equates to a pixel density of 267ppi.

It’s also tipped to be powered by a 1.3GHz 64-bit octa-core MediaTek processor, although a separate rumour suggests a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip will be used instead.

The grapevine also points to 16GB of storage, 2GB of RAM, a 2,800mAh battery, 13-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing one.

The device will purportedly support 4G LTE network connections, offer dual-SIM capability, and run on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OS straight out of the box.

Unfortunately, until HTC actually verifies any of this information, we’ll have to take these rumours with a pinch of salt. Even the TENAA certification isn’t absolute proof of an imminent Desire 728 release.
