Microsoft looks set to become one of the next big tech players to join the wearables race, as patents for a Microsoft smartwatch appear online.
With the likes of Samsung, LG and Motorola having already shown off their smartwatch efforts, and with bitter rivals Apple and Google both tipped to be working on their own devices,
Although the device has not been named, Microsoft’s design patent for “the ornamental design for an electronic band, as shown and described,” has highlighted the company’s progress on the smartwatch front.
Based on the teased images, the Microsoft wearable will feature a form similar to that of the TomTom Runner, with a square touchscreen display able to be popped out of the strap.
Specs are currently a mystery, but the design graphics have revealed the watch will boast a slim, tapered strap and – by the looks of things – recharge options via microSD.
If accurate this would give the device bonus points over a number of existing smartwatches, such as the Samsung Gear 2, which use proprietary charging ports.
While the prospect of a Microsoft smartwatch might not be surrounded with as much excitement as an Apple Watch or Motorola Moto 360 arrival, the leaked patent shows a statement of intent from the manufacturer.
