Is Facebook planning a Messenger gaming platform?

Facebook could be looking to incorporate games into its Messenger platform, a new report reveals.

According to The Information, the company is ‘ramping up its interest in games’, and is ‘in active conversations’ with game developers.

The move is reportedly down to the fact that games are ‘stickier’ and offer the chance to generate more revenue.

Apparently there’s no definitive deadline for when we’ll see games within the Messenger app store, however.

The report details how Ilya Sukhar, the executive in charge of Facebook Messenger products, confirmed that discussions were taking place.

Facebook opened up its Messenger service to third-parties back in March, allowing developers to create content like GIFs, stickers, and drawings within the platform.

Traction has reportedly been slow on this front however, which is driving the move towards in-app gaming.

The report alleges that Facebook is yet to decide whether the games will be part of Messenger proper, or merely use Messenger as a way of connecting players.

This suggests we’ll likely see multiplayer titles on the service, with Messenger used to link players in game.

Facebook has made no official comment on the matter thus far.
