We are still awaiting confirmation from Amazon that we will even get the Kindle Fire tablet in the UK but an analyst believes that the online retailer is ready to launch a new 9in version of the tablet along with a refreshed 7in version by the middle of 2012.
According to one analyst, the online retailer will sell a shed load of the tablets this year, but this is based on Amazon refreshing the line-up. Pacific Crest analyst Chad Bartley this week raised his Kindle Fire sales estimates saying: “We are raising our 2012 sales forecasts to 14.9 million from 12.7 million. But we believe there is an upward bias, particularly from the new 7- and 9-inch models, which we expect to launch in mid-2012.”
According to some, the Kindle Fire has had some affect on sales of the iPad 2 in recent months, but that may also have been caused by people holding out to buy the iPad 3, which is almost certain to be launched in the first week of March.
Last month Apple reported more record profits and at the time its CEO, Tim Cook described rivals to the iPad as “limited-function tablets” which had little or no affect on iPad sales.
As well as raising his expectations for sales of the Fire, Bartley also lowered his sales estimate for Kindle ereaders from 28 million to just 24m but he pointed out that this was not as a result of the increase in Fire sales and probably down ot more competition int he market.
With Apple so dominant in the larger-size tablet market (9in plus), Amazon may struggle to be able to maintain its strategy of loss-leading hardware supplemented by future content purchases.
