Wide codec support and expandable storage should please those not entirely sold on convergence.
iRiver has been a little quiet of late but its suddenly back with a rather quirky new PMP…
Yes, yes we know the argument: MP3/PMP it is all dead as the smartphone runs riot (it was the primary frustration with the Zii powered Creative Plaszma) but these markets will be here for some time yet.
Consequently we get the ‘E200’ (successor to the E100) which while not the prettiest device we’ve ever seen is certainly a flexible unit with MP3, WMA, Ogg, ASF and FLAC audio support plus RMVB, Xvid Mpeg4, WMV9 native video playback. You’ll get a large 2.8in screen too, it isn’t touchscreen but there are love/hate touch sensitive navigation buttons.
Elsewhere you’ll find an FM tuner (with FM recording), integrated speakers and SRS HD WOW sound enhancement technology along with a choice of 4GB, 8GB and 16GB versions plus a microSD expansion slot. At just 9.9mm thick the E200 is also particularly pocket friendly and the UI looks a cut above anything iRiver has come up with previously.
Yes, you ”can’t make calls on it” and there’s no web browser or app store but if you just want to a PMP to be a PMP (and avoid an 18/24 month sign your life away contract) then the iRiver E200 may just fit the bill. UK pricing and availability are expected soon.
