iRiver Goes With The Flow

iRiver follows the trend of its rivals by expanding its line of hard disk and Flash memory based music players.

iRiver’s ever expanding H10 range of Creative Zen Micro “influenced” players is to fill out further next month with the addition of two new models.

Going straight for the 4G iPod’s throat (and perhaps even more the Zen) is the H10 20GB. It is petite at just 102 x 61 x 22mm and comes with a 1.8in, 262k colour screen which gives it a one up on its rivals – at least for a month or so. You can use the screen to show off album art, text or images all the while boogying down to your favourite tracks (do we really boogie these days? I guess Elvis is in the charts…). Battery life is good compared to the current generations of its rivals at 16 hours but expect that to become little more than the norm soon. A built in microphone, FM tuner and colour range of ”midnight” blue, ”deep” red, ”neo” silver, and ”slate” gray (you can thank iRiver for the italics) all help to give it a bit more kick. RRP is a competitive £229 including VAT.

Looking almost identical, but decidedly smaller, in this Russian doll family of players is the H10 1GB. With dimensions of 72 x 42 x 16mm and weighing a mere 63 grams, iRiver claims the flash memory based product is comparable to a Zippo lighter, just don’t try filling it with liquid butane (the 1.2in colour screen should at least help you tell the difference – even after a couple of pints). And for those of you struggling to tell the 1GB from the 20GB from the scale-less photos above, look at the vertical slider: the larger capacity device has an inny while the smaller has an outy, so to speak. Also available with an FM tuner, built in mic, incredible 60 hours of battery life and same adjectively challenged range of colours, the H10 1GB will set you back £139 including VAT.
