iPod Touch 7th generation: Apple just upgraded its long-forgotten music player

Apple has answered the prayers of phone-averse music fans with the new iPod Touch 2019, which rocks a new processor and offers plenty of storage.

It might have been four years since the last iPod was released, but Apple has refreshed the era-defining music player with new specifications. Here’s everything we know so far, including the release date, specifications, features, colours, and camera information. Is this the right music player for you?

iPod Touch release date: When is the iPod Touch out?

The latest iPod Touch was announced on May 28 and is immediately available to buy from the Apple Store.

It’s only the first announcement of many that we expect around this time, as Apple’s WWDC 2019 conference kicks off on June 3. Plenty of announcements are expected for the tech event, including the launch of iOS 13, so remember to check our website for all the latest updates.

iPod Touch price: How much does the iPod Touch cost?

The new iPod Touch has a tempting base price of £199 ($199), making it by far Apple’s most affordable iOS device. However, that price does rapidly increases as you opt for more storage:

  • 32GB: £199 ($199)
  • 128GB: £299 ($299)

iPod Touch specs

As expected, the iPod Touch is a significant upgrade on its 4-year-old predecessor

  • Processor: It runs on the A10 Fusion processor which is found in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Apple claim this will give you 2x the speed and 3x better graphics compared to the 6th generation iPod Touch.
  • Storage: it’s available in three storage options: 32GB, 128GB, and 256GB (the largest-ever capacity for an iPod Touch)
  • Size: the device measures 123.4mm by 58.6mm by 6.1mm, and weighs 88 grams.
  • Screen: The screen clocks in at 4 inches diagonally, and has a 1136 x 640 resolution.
  • Headphone Jack: It will fortunately retain the 3.5mm headphone jack, which goes against the grain of modern mobile devices reliant on a Bluetooth or Lightning connection for audio.
  • Operating System: It will run iOS 12 at launch, but we presume it will receive the update for iOS 13 later in 2019 along with Apple’s other mobile devices

iPod Touch camera: How good is the iPod Touch camera?

The iPod Touch has a single rear camera, and a selfie camera. Are they up to Apple’s usual high standard? The specs are below, but you’ll have to wait for our full review to see what we make of their performance.

The rear camera has an 8-megapixel resolution, with an f/2.4 aperture. It also features handy optimisation such as Auto Image Stabilisation and HDR. It can record video in 1080p HD, with 3x zoom and 120fps slow motion.

The tiny selfie camera above the screen has a 1.2-megapixel resolution, an f/2.2 aperture, and can record video in 720p

iPod Touch features: What else can the iPod Touch do?

Along with playing music, using apps and watching videos as before, the iPod Touch takes advantage of the new processor to offer some new exciting features — remember you’re be limited to using Wi-Fi rather than mobile data on this device.

  • ARKit: It can now use neat augmented reality tricks, such as casting an animated animal into your photos
  • Group FaceTime: the camera enables video calls with multiple people at once
  • Arcade: it will run Apple’s new video game streaming service, which allows you play against competitors online
  • Apple Music: you’ll now be able to access Apple’s music streaming service, including a library of 50 million songs.
