iPhone X Sold Out: Sellers flock to eBay with £5,000 listings

In news that will surprise no one, Apple’s iPhone X has already sold out, despite having been on sale for just 10 minutes.

Last month, Apple unveiled three new smartphones: the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X. While the former two were fairly uninspiring, the latter was a major update and has premium-tier features like an OLED screen and a Face ID facial recognition system.

But if you want one then you’re probably out of luck, because the handset has already sold out after being available for pre-order for just 10 minutes on Friday morning. That’s arguably a huge win for Apple given that each handset costs anywhere from £999 to £1,149. However, rumours of supply delays suggest that Apple’s launch stock may not have been as abundant as first hoped.

If you go to Apple’s UK online store right now and try to place an iPhone X pre-order, you’ll be notified of massive delays. In fact, Apple is currently estimating delivery times at between five and six weeks, bringing us perilously close to Christmas.

There’s also major concerns within the industry that Apple’s component suppliers are struggling to get good yield on certain iPhone X parts, which could lead to further delays going forward. This means it might not get much easier to buy an iPhone X until well into 2018.

Of course, enterprising individuals are already taking advantage of this shortage, with sellers flocking to eBay to flog iPhone X handsets at huge mark-ups. Most handsets appear to be listed for a few hundred pounds over Apple’s R.R.P, but there are many on sale for £3,000 – and five top-spec versions up for grabs at a ludicrous £5,000 per unit.

The iPhone X was announced on September 12, and becomes available in stores on November 3, 2017. The phone features a power-efficient 5.8-inch Super Retina HD OLED display, a new all-screen front design, and a Face ID unlock system. It runs on Apple’s new A11 Bionic chip, boasts 3GB of LPDDR4X RAM, and comes in either 64GB or 256GB storage variants.
