Report: OSX update will let you unlock your Mac with your iPhone

WWDC 2016 is just around the corner, and we’ve already heard rumours of new Macbooks and Siri finally appearing on OS X.

Now, a report (via MacRumours) seems to suggest that Apple is gearing up to announce another new feature for the upcoming OS X update.

According to the report, the update could bring Touch ID support to the operating system, with a new auto-unlock feature that would allow you to unlock your Mac using your iPhone when the two are in close proximity.

As MacRumours points out, auto-unlock for OS X 10.12 could work in much the same way as an existing function which allows an unlocked iPhone to control an Apple Watch without having to enter a passcode.

The report also speculates that an Apple Watch could use the new functionality to unlock Macs without an iPhone being present.

Auto-unlock for OS X is said to use Bluetooth LE frameworks, and would be an official version of the existing Knock app, which unlocks nearby computers using iOS and an Apple Watch.

With this new functionality, Touch ID could also be used to confirm Apple Pay transactions, which are rumoured to be coming to web browsers in the near future.

We’re hopeful that Apple will announce the new feature at WWDC in June, although nothing is certain at this point.
