A new image that allegedly shows the upcoming iPhone 9 suggests good news and bad news for iOS photography buffs. Disappointingly, it suggests that the phone will only have one lens for its rear camera – but on the bright side, said lens could be massive.
That may be a literal bright side, as well as a figurative one, by the way. A larger lens suggests a wider aperture, which would allow more light in – which in turn would provide better, brighter photographs. The photo above, published on Slashleaks, shows such a lens on the back of what is claimed to be an iPhone 9.

There are a couple of other small clues about the new iPhone that could be teased out from this shot − if, of course, it’s the real deal. The LED flash has been moved a little bit, but more importantly the picture shows a glassy back like the one found on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.
That’s not just a design point – it also suggests that wireless charging will make a return, so no need to put your chargers on eBay.
But is it real?
Some are sceptical as to whether this photo is legitimate or not. Ben Geskin posted the picture on Twitter arguing that it was a Photoshopped iPhone 8 taken in a store, which would explain the identical glass back.
We shouldn’t have too long to wait to find out, in any case. Apple tends to announce new iPhones in September, so we should have a pretty good idea of the company’s next direction soon.
