iPhone 7 hissing? Why it’s probably nothing to worry about

Reports over the weekend have detailed a strange hissing phenomenon as pertains to the newly released Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus handsets.

First spotted and recorded by Stephen Hackett of 512 Pixels, the handset appears to hiss like a punctured bike tire when under duress.

Hackett was restoring his iPhone 7 through an iCloud back-up at the time and since posting the discovery, many other users have noted a similar occurrence.

Here’s the recording:

Could this be this be latest iPhone issue to have the dreaded ‘gate’ label attached to it? Apple has so far declined to comment.

Currently this doesn’t really seem like too big of a deal. iMore claims all devices make this noise when under a load, with varying degrees of audibility.

One theory suggests this could be akin to the coil whine you hear when PC processors are heavily taxed.

Why would this suddenly be affecting phones? Well the iPhone 7’s A10 processor is the most powerful Apple has ever deployed in a smartphone. Perhaps this is a side effect of all that extra oomph?

The issue does not appear to be pervasive across all iPhone 7 devices, so it may be that some handsets are doing a better job of dampening the noise than others.

Either way, it appears that Apple may be willing to exchange hissing devices through AppleCare.

Stephen Hackett was able to secure a replacement handset. If you’re planning a similar strategy, remember iPhone 7 stocks aren’t exactly abundant right now.
