iPhone 6S tipped to carry 2GB of LPDDR4 RAM

The latest in iPhone 6S rumour-dom is that Apple’s next flagship will carry 2GB of memory.

The news comes courtesy of TechNews.tw (via GForGames), revealing that the iPhone 6S is likely to carry more RAM than ever before.

Since the iPhone 5, Apple has stuck to its guns with 1GB of RAM, even with the newer iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets.

This might sound terrible when compared to Android smartphones, some of which carry 3GB or even 4GB of memory.

Fortunately Apple handsets don’t suffer performance issues as a result of the lower RAM because iOS and the corollary software are well optimised for a small portfolio of handsets and components – that’s compared to the massively fragmented Android platform.

Despite this, it’s probably about time Apple upgraded its iPhone RAM to gel better with the increasing app demands on smartphones.

We’re not just expecting a memory capacity increase either – the report also claims we’ll see Apple opt for LPDDR4 RAM instead of the current LPDDR3 modules that began shipping with the iPhone 5S.

While more expensive to produce, LPDDR4 RAM touts double the bandwidth of its predecessor, without drawing more juice from your battery.

According to the report, Hynix will build half of the new RAM modules, with 30 per cent built by Samsung and the remaining 20 per cent by Micron-Elpida – the latter is ‘behind schedule’, however.
