iPhone 6 to feature one-handed mode

Apple’s forthcoming iPhone 6 will come with a special one-handed mode, according to a recent report.

Those who know their Apple history will know that the company – and particularly the late Steve Jobs – was always scornful of large-screen smartphones for one simple reason: they couldn’t be used comfortably in one hand.

Now, with the iPhone 6 set to expand to 4.7 and even 5.5-inches, plenty of people can smell a U-turn.

Not so, according to the New York Times. In the same sizeable report that mentioned the Apple Watch‘s likely flexible display, it’s been revealed that Apple is playing with the iOS interface to make it usable one-handed on a larger device.

In fact, according to two Apple employees there’ll be a one-handed mode that can be activated or deactivated, allowing users to type or use apps in one hand.

Elsewhere the report confirms the presence of NFC in the new iPhone 6, which will facilitate Apple’s new mobile payment system. With reports that Apple has reached agreements with Visa, MasterCard, and American Express to support this new system, it could finally jump-start mobile payments in the mainstream.

Apple will launch the two iPhone 6 models, as well as the iWatch, on September 9. The company has confirmed that it will be live streaming what could be the most important Apple event since the launch of the iPad.
