The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 has reportedly been delayed until 2015 due to battery sourcing issues.
Apple is supposedly preparing a duo of iPhone 6 models to launch later this year, but apparently the 5.5-inch model launch has been pushed back to next year.
According to Taiwanese publication the Industrial and Commercial Times, Apple is struggling to find a battery powerful enough for the 5.5-inch model but thin enough to fit inside Apple’s traditionally slim profile smartphone designs.
The report also suggests that Apple’s own suppliers are referring to the 5.5-inch model as the iPhone Air, aping the new naming system introduced by the iPad Air at the end of last year and of course the MacBook Air before it.
Whether this will be what the device is called come launch isn’t known yet, but it would be an easy way to differentiate between the two iPhone 6 models.
Whether the battery issue rumours are true, all the recent leaks point to Apple increasing the screen size for the iPhone 6 up from the existing 4-inch display of the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C.
The 4.7-inch edition is expected to be officially unveiled in September, which would fall into the usual Apple smartphone launch schedule.
Both model sizes could potentially make use of quantum dot display technologies already used on the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX tablet lines, improving colour reproduction and display quality for the 2014 Apple flagship.
Apple CEO Tim Cook stated earlier this year that display quality, not just size, is very important to the company.
“We want to give our customers what’s right in all respects – not just the size but in the resolution, in the clarity, in the contrast, in the reliability,” said Cook. “There are many different parameters to measure a display and we care about all those, because we know that’s the window to the software.”
