iPhone 5S three times more popular than iPhone 5C

Apple’s premium brand appeal seems to be enduring, with the flagship iPhone 5S outselling its cheaper, more colourful iPhone 5C sibling by a ratio of three-to-one.

With both the high-end iPhone 5S and mid-range iPhone 5C having been unveiled back in September, it had been expected that the introduction of a slightly more affordable Apple handset would bring more users to the company’s iOS platform.

However, according to new figures collated by research analysts at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, the majority of new iPhone owners are plumping for the more expensive iPhone 5S.

Although the majority of new iPhone owners are overlooking the iPhone 5C, the plastic-clad model is said to be bringing in a wider audience to Apple handsets. According to the newly released figures, iPhone 5C owners are older and less financially well off than their iPhone 5S owning counterparts.

What’s more, iPhone 5C owners have been shown to be migrating across from Android devices, a trend which is sure to please the Cupertino-based manufacturer.

The good news for Apple is that this wider appeal is attracting significant switching from competitors,” Dominic Sunnebo, Strategic Insight Director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech said.

He added: “Almost half of iPhone 5c owners switched from competitor brands, particularly Samsung and LG, compared with 80 per cent of 5s owners who upgraded from a previous iPhone model.”

Although the iPhone 5C has seen users move over from Android, Apple’s share of the smartphone sector continues to be dwarfed by its Google made rival.

“Generally, Apple’s share of the market still remains lower than when the iPhone 5 was released, although this is not wholly unexpected as shoppers tend to react more positively to ‘full’ releases than incremental improvements such as the 5s and 5c,” Sunnebo stated.
