iPhone 5 to Use Quad-Core Exynos CPU?

Apple’s iPhone 5 will reportedly use a quad-core Exynos based CPU made by Samsung – the same series of processor used in the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Citing “industry souces”, DigiTimes claims that the next iPhone will use a Samsung Exynos-based processor. This will give the iPhone 5 the quad-core power it needs to square up to the Samsung Galaxy S3’s spec sheet.

It may seem odd that Apple’s biggest smartphone rival produces the iPhone’s chips, but the same is true of the A5 unit inside the iPhone 4S. Once released, the iPhone 5’s processor is expected to bear the “A6” name, rather than the more clearly Samsung-linked Exynos brand.

A caveat should be pinned to this news, though. Source DigiTimes is one of the most infamous peddlers of dubious Apple news, its “insider sources” rarely – if ever – clear enough to scrutinise.

In other Apple rumours, an iPad mini has been widely reported as a dead-cert for release later this year.
