iPhone 5 jailbroken already

The iPhone 5 has already been jailbroken with it taking one hacker just 8 hours to circumvent the phone’s security and find a way to load non-App Store apps onto the device.

Established iPhone hacker Grant Paul who uses the online handle ‘chpwn’, used his Twitter account to announce the news. He initially posted a screenshot from an iPhone 5 showing an icon for the unauthorised app store, Cydia, which can only be loaded onto hacked devices. This he accompanied with the words, “Taller screens like Cydia too. :)”.

After initial scepticism as to whether the phone had really been hacked, he then followed up with another screenshot of the app running and of the iPhone itself.

Jailbreaking is required to enable unauthorised apps to be loaded onto the iPhone, which is something Apple is not keen on as it likes to keep tight control over the features of the phone and more importantly if apps can be loaded onto the device without using the App Store it means Apple doesn’t get a cut of any money earned.

Sadly for those hoping to jailbreak their own handets, chpwn hasn’t yet released details of how the hack was performed. But, expect them to arrive shortly.
