The iPhone 5 launched on Friday to a wildly expectant audience, but there already appear to be a couple of issues with the impossibly light smartphone. And we’re not even talking about that controversial new Maps app, either.
Reports from forums across the web suggest that the iPhone 5 might have Wi-Fi troubles, as well as being ridiculously easily to scratch.
According to one lengthy Apple support thread, “My iPhone 5 connects to wifi networks and remembers them, but receives absolutely zero data through the network.”
25 pages of comments later, it appears plenty of other users are experiencing Wi-Fi woes. Many of them make reference to WPA2 Wi-Fi security settings as being the issue, with matters resolving themselves when this is turned off or a new security standard is switched to.
It appears to be an iPhone 5 problem rather than an iOS 6 problem, to, as updated iPhone 4s and iPhone 4Ss seem to be unaffected.
Elsewhere, AllThingsD calls attention to an alarming issue with Apple’s legendary external design. Some users are reporting that their iPhone 5s are extremely easy to scratch – in particular the rear section comprised of anodised aluminium.
In fact, “numerous accounts state that users are receiving iPhone 5 devices damaged directly out of the packaging, before customers have had chance to actually lay hands the device.”
It seems the black model is the big issue, going by the likes of this 101 page (and counting) Macrumors forum thread. Almost half of the respondents claim damage issues, and most claim to have noted this damage out of the box.
Apple switched to an aluminium construction for the new iPhone, as opposed to the stainless steel bodies of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, though aluminium is known to be less scratch-resistant.
Is this a widespread issue, or its this just a small but understandably vocal minority speaking up? It’ll be interesting to see how the two issues unfold, and what (if any) action Apple will take to rectify the problems.
