iPad Mini with Retina display could be in production next month

Retina displays for the iPad mini could be in production as early as next month, giving the 7.9-inch slate one of the best resolution tablets.

According to Richard Shim, an analyst at display market research firm NPD DisplaySearch, LG Display are due to start production of iPad mini Retina displays next month.

“We should see the start of mass production of the panels in June or July,” said Richard Shim, and analyst at NPD DisplaySearch.

LG Display (LGD) is said to be one of the major manufacturers for the Retina iPad mini or iPad mini 2 panels, rather than Samsung. Other suppliers will get a look in, but according to Shim, LG Display appears to be Apple’s manufacturer of choice.

“Samsung is currently not in the iPad mini and they won’t be in the next generation. LGD is becoming a much bigger supplier than before,” Shim added.

Packing in a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536p, the 7.9-inch Retina iPad mini display will have a similar PPI image density as the 326ppi iPhone 5. With an image density of 324ppi, this would make the iPad mini Retina display one of the best tablet screens currently seen on the market.

“We’re going to see a bunch of tablets [coming to market] with a pixel density over 300. At a certain point it will be hard to discern that improved image quality,” added Shin.

Amazon is said to be updating its 7-inch and 8.9-inch Amazon Kindle Fire HD tablets with 300ppi or more displays and the Google Nexus 10 is already close to that with a 299ppi image density.

NPD DisplaySearch has said the first Retina iPad mini release date is set for Q3 2013, but a second Retina display model with a new processor will appear in Q1 2014.
