iPad mini’s 7.9-inch form factor is tablet ‘sweet spot’ says rival manufacturer

Apple has struck the ‘sweet spot’ of the tablet market with the 7.9-inch iPad mini, rival manufacturer and tablet producer Disgo has suggested.

With the iPad mini going on to outsell its 9.7-inch iPad 4 sibling since launch late last year, a release that has seen a resurgence to the sub 10-inch tablet sector, Disgo representatives have suggested that Apple’s new 7.9-inch device is the ‘sweet spot’ of the tablet market.

“Apple has hit the sweet spot with the iPad mini, and 7.9-inch has now become the size that everyone wants,” Luke Noonan, Sourcing Director of Disgo’s parent company CMS Distribution said whilst speaking with TrustedReviews.

Although far from the most technically advanced or specs impressive device on the market, the iPad mini has stormed to the mantel of the tablet supremacy, outselling a selection of cheaper, faster and, on paper at least, better Android tablets in the process, such as the Google Nexus 7.

Highlighting how Apple has reinvigorated the tablet market and helped sparked consumer interest in 7.9-inch devices, Noonan has claimed that prior to the iPad mini, tablet device’s boarding on an 8-inch form factor were shunned by buyers.

“We did a 7.9-inch product towards the end of 2011, and interest was terrible, nobody wanted it, consumers only wanted 7-inch or 9.7-inch tablets at the time,” the Disgo spokesperson said.

He added: “However, as soon as Apple launched the iPad mini, everyone wanted a 7.9-inch device. Apple is so powerful it can dictate the market like this.”

With the iPad mini 2 reportedly set to land later this year with a Retina display in tow, Noonan has predicted that, for the foreseeable future at least, 7.9-inch tablets are going to continue to dominate.

“It will be interesting to see how the tablet market develops,” he said, adding “but right now, 7.9-inch is certainly the sweet spot.”
