iPad Mini Rumoured to Resemble Giant iPod touch

It seems the Apple rumour-merchants on the web are reappraising their expectations of what the iPad Mini will look like, and have concluded that a leaner, narrower model is the likeliest outcome. In fact, the expected 7.85-inch tablet will apparently look more like a large iPod touch than a small iPad.

That’s the opinion of two well connected Apple speculators at 9to5Mac and Daring Fireball. The former has even mocked up what it thinks the device will look like (pictured).

This image stemmed from a number of tips that the iPad Mini was to do away with the iPad’s thick side bezel, producing a near edge-to-edge display.

When you think about it, this makes a lot of sense. The iPad, with its 9.7-inch 4:3 display, requires those wide borders in order to hold it. It’s too big a device to get a grip in any other way.

When you look at 7-inch tablets like the Google Nexus 7, however, these can be held in one hand. Of course, such mini-tablets also have a longer, thinner aspect ratio. That’s why an iPad Mini with its iPad-matching ‘short and fat’ aspect ratio would benefit from losing a little meat at the sides, so it could be held in the same way as its direct rivals.

Given that other reports have suggested the iPad Mini won’t come with a Retina display, it’s quite likely that Apple will go with an extremely slim, lightweight device that’s all screen.

So, a large iPod touch, essentially.

Current thinking (based on a lack of leaked parts) puts the iPad Mini’s likely launch dateafter the release of the iPhone 5 in September.
