Leaked component images alleged to be for the iPad mini 2 suggest that the device could well sport a Retina display.
Apple Insider recently featured images, initially listed on a Chinese forum, of a mysterious new rear casing component. It’s an aluminium rear cover with an Apple insignia on it, and it appears to be of a similar size to the iPad mini.
If genuine, the component could well be the rear cover for the forthcoming iPad mini 2. It’s the elements that set the component apart from the current iPad mini that are of real interest here.
The parts appear to be thicker than the current iPad mini. The last time a follow-up iPad got thicker was the iPad 3, which was the first to adopt the Retina display. The extra power needed to push all those extra pixels necessitates a bigger battery and thus a bigger housing.
This would suggest that the iPad mini 2 will, as predicted, feature a Retina display.
The report points out that bringing a Retina display to the iPad mini’s 7.9-inch form factor would likely produce a display with a 324 ppi pixel density, which is closer to the iPhone 5 than the iPad 4.
While the addition of a Retina display to the iPad mini 2 seems inevitable, the report points out that it will come at a cost. It’s estimated that the addition of a super-sharp screen will add 30 per cent to the total cost.
So the iPad mini might look a lot better, but it’s unlikely to come in at just £269.
