Special report: iPad 3 / New iPad : What You Need To Know
Hands on: iPad 3 Review

Rumours are growing stronger that the much vaunted iPad 3 could well be dubbed the iPad HD, suggesting it won’t be a major upgrade after all.

The iPad HD name was first bandied around after it was seen in leaked product listings from third-party case manufacturers, but now these rumours have been further bolstered by reports from Cnet and Venturebeat. Both sites report sources close to Apple have confirmed the new name, though no other details were given out.

What we can assume, though, is that if the HD name is used it’s likely the processor won’t change significantly – i.e. it won’t be quad core – and few other key features will be added.

iPad 3 or iPad HD?

While this could be seen as suggesting a slightly anti-climactic product launch, we’re still talking about a tablet expected to sport a class-leading 2,048 x
1,536 resolution display. The iPad HD name could also be taken as a sign that the camera will be bumped up to HD resolution (though knowing Apple it will only be 720p HD Ready rather than 1080p Full HD).

Also, while this draws parallels with what for some was the disappointment of the iPhone 4S launch, it must be remembered that it has generally proved to be a much improved handset in day to day use. If the iPad HD pulls off the same trick, there are still bound to be plenty of happy customers. Furthermore, we’re heard little about potential software changes that could make all the difference.

Whatever the outcome, we’ll be at Apple’s press conference for the launch event tomorrow, so stay tuned for all the latest.
