iOS 8 split-screen mode demonstrated in video

A video showing iOS 8’s split-screen mode has been posted onto the internet.

The prospect of running two apps side by side had been rumoured prior to WWDC 2014, but the event itself revealed nothing of note on the subject.

Just a couple of days ago, a developer discovered references to such a feature within the iOS 8 beta’s SpringBoard app. It was found that apps could be run in three different sizes – a quarter of the screen, half the screen, or three quarters of the screen.

Now that same developer has managed to get the feature working in the iPad simulator, and has recorded the results.

As you can see, Apple’s implementation of this split-screen feature seems typically straight forward. All you need to do to resize an app is give it a two-fingered sideways swipe. Depending on how far you extend that swipe, the app will resize to three quarters, half, or a quarter of the screen (as per the earlier reveal).

The example shown in the video is Apple’s Safari browser, which is stretched to all three of the key sizes.

Naturally this is a very rough demonstration of how the feature could look. We can expect the final implementation to be far smoother, but it’s good to see that the foundation for full multitasking is in there.

iOS 8 will launch in the autumn along with at least one model of iPhone 6.
