iOS 8 release date teases potential autumn iPhone 6 arrival

Apple has confirmed what we all expected, with an autumn iOS 8 release date hinting that the iPhone 6 is not far off.

Having unveiled its latest iPhone and iPad software during its WWDC 2014 Keynote, Apple revealed that it will stick with past product cycles and hold the eagerly awaited iOS 8 release date this ‘fall’.

Speaking to a room full of developers and an online audience around the world, Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering stated: “iOS 8 is going to be available in Beta today. It will be available for everyone in the fall.

Although the Cupertino-based company made no specific reference to hardware, it is widely believed that the fall iOS 8 release date will coincide with the consumer arrival of a new iPhone.

Last year the iOS 7 release date landed alongside the iPhone 5S launch, with 2012 seeing an iOS 6 update touch down to coincide with the iPhone 5 arrival.

With Apple stating its eagerness to ensure iOS 8 is available on as broad a range of devices as possible, the company has confirmed that the new software will launch as an update for 10 of its most recent portable products.

Sadly for those still hanging on to their beloved iPhone 4 handsets, there will be no iOS 8 patch for the aging classic.

Devices set to benefit from an iOS 8 release date include the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S. On a music front the 5th generation iPod touch will also receive the update.

iPad owners fret not, you haven’t been left out. All Apple tablets from the iPad 2 onwards, including both iPad mini iterations will gain iOS 8 this autumn.

An exact iOS 8 release date is still to be confirmed.

Featuring a strong health and wellbeing focus, iOS 8 will introduce a raft of new features covering everything from Mail and Safari updates to Notification revisions and a new QuickType keyboard.

Star of the show, however, is HealthKit, a new centralised hub for all you fitness app data.

“HealthKit provides a single place where applications can create a comprehensive wellbeing and health,” Federighi stated.
