iOS 6 Features: 3D Maps Screenshots Leaked

We’re not entirely sure what feature goodies iOS 6 has in store yet, but 3D rendered buildings within the maps app are on the cards. It makes the navigation app look like a mid-90s flight sim, and has us kinda excited.

BGR has published screenshots purporting to be representative of the new Maps app of iOS 6. This is an even bigger departure from the current mapping app of iOS 5 than it seems, as it also marks Apple parting from the Google Maps solution in use now. Apple’s going it alone, and it should result in an all-new Maps experience.

The screenshots come from a “trusted source”, and while that term is about as trustworthy as a politician’s expenses, the Boy Genius has made more serious leaks over the past few years than an incontinent grandpa. BGRs screens show that the 3D rendered buildings do look a little wonky, but the level of detail extrapolated from satellite photography is nevertheless highly impressive.

Apple was rumoured to break with Google Maps with iOS 5, but the move never materialised. Our best guess is that Apple has been working on an in-house mapping solution for years now. iOS 6 is expected to launch at WWDC this year, on June 11.
