Intradyn’s affordable RocketVault means there no excuse for businesses to neglect backing up their data.
US based start-up IntraDyn announced yesterday the availability in the UK of its potentially revolutionary backup solution. Known as RocketVault, it offers enterprise class backup at a price that should make it attractive for small and medium sized businesses.
Data backup is possibly one of the least exciting areas in IT and all too often, one of the most neglected. The irony though, is that it’s one of the most important. According to figures from a Yankee Group Study, 50 per cent of small businesses don’t have any kind of backup solution in place. Of those that do, 50 per cent of those fail to restore properly when actually needed, due to a combination of the inherent unreliability of tape backup and human error. For many of these companies, losing data can eventually cause the business to fail. Even when tape backup does work it often takes a long time to restore data, usually causing a day of down time.
Intradyn’s RocketVault avoids these pitfalls by making the backup process automatic and completely transparent to the user. In the event of failure it offers speedy and efficient restoration with a unique combination of local and off-site hard disk based storage.
The box is simple to set up and use, with only two cables to hook up – one for power and one to connect to the network. Once plugged in the box performs a one time set up and then is up and running. The configuration software uses a web browser and focuses on ease of use. Users can choose to have entire folders backed up or just certain files.
The entry level box is the RocketVault 240 – which is essentially a Shuttle based PC running FreeBSD rather than Windows. This contains a 120GB disk, which thanks to RocketVault’s 2:1 compression ratio, can store 240GB of data. Moving up, there’s also a 500GB version. The backup solution benefits from 256-bit AES encryption, meeting US government security standards and a RAID version is available as an option.
The RocketVault is distributed in the UK exclusively by Synapse Consulting. Colin Sheard, CEO of Synapse told TrustedReviews that all companies need to look at the benefits of off-site storage. “Most companies don’t appreciate how important having off-site storage is. If something happens to the building all their vital data could be lost”.
A package is available offering 5GB of off-site storage for £50 a month. However, if you have your own web space available, RocketVault can be configured to use that instead.
RocketVault is also available in rack mountable configurations. A 1U rack can store between 640GB AND 1TB (TeraByte) of data, while the 2TU rack offers between 1.6 and 4TB of storage.
Prices for the entry level box start at less than £1000 and rise to just under £15,000 for the 4TB unit.
