Here's a clever concept, as long as you are not on a 3 or Vodafone monthly contract...
Making international calls? Need a clever little way to get out of those expensive international call rates? The aptly named DialAbroad has just released a solution that may suit you.
The service is called MobilePlus and the good news is it takes only three steps and there are no accounts to open, the bad news is you can’t get away with it on all networks. How it works is like this: Dial the company’s number (07744 788 888), at the prompt dial your international destination number but don’t press ‘call’ afterwards, wait and the call will be free provided you have sufficient free minutes left.
Now obviously for this to work you need to be on a monthly contract, but in addition DialAbroad says Vodafone and 3 networks have excluded the company’s number from being used with its inclusive minutes. If in doubt, call your operator to double check. How does the call show up on your mobile? You’ll see a call placed to the company’s number, the duration and a charge of zero pence, provided you had enough monthly minutes remaining to cover the length of the call. If not, the additional time will be charged at standard cross network rates.
Ultimately, international calls rates are still one of the biggest banes of going abroad. Skype and other VoIP technology has done a lot to cut back the profits of greedy telcos, but services like this should help further slim their wallets until that fabled day when calls are no longer geography based…
