Intel Readying Far Smaller UMPC Chipset?

Potentially a great many steps in the right direction.

With the unholy shock that UMPCs might not be totally pointless, could they actually become ”desirable”…?

According to slides garnered by HKEPC that is the stunning emotional mindset we may soon find ourselves adopting should ‘McCaslin’ turn out to be true.

McCaslin is allegedly the codename for Intel’s latest attempt at the UMPC platform and claims to reduce the existing 2915sq mm footprint of forebear UCP to a minuscule 975sq mm. This would clearly have drastic effect on the form factors manufacturers could produce.

Equally impressive is the claim McCaslin will boost battery life from an average of two to three hours to between four and five hours while the display can now be anywhere from five to eight inches across.

One of the primary reasons for these improvements is the unveiling of ‘Stealey’, the 90nm successor to the Intel Celeron M ULV. Like the Celeron ULV it will come equipped with 512K of L2 cache but the TDP drops from 12.6W to 9.3W and the average consumption from 3.4W to 1.95W. Furthermore the versatility of McCaslin sounds fantastic with WWAN, GPS and even a TV Tuner able to be added to the chipset.

A very specific launch date of 18 April is the final intriguing detail to be attributed to McCaslin and given the secrecy surrounding the chipset used in Sammy’s Q1 Ultra I can’t help but wonder – should the slides be genuine – if this is the first implementation of it?

Will we soon all be hankering after UMPCs? Say it isn’t so…
