Intel Announces Smallest SSDs

Slim, sexy devices about to become slimmer and sexier.

Smaller, lighter, faster – all adjectives we like to hear in the technology world and thankfully all ones which apply to Intel’s latest ultra small SSDs.

The ‘Z-P140′ range (in a rather linguistically sensible way) follows Intel’s Z-P130 line, its first foray into the petite SSD market earlier this year.

Made in 2GB and 4GB capacities, these teeny PATA marvels measure just 18 x 12 x 1.8mm making them an incredible 400x smaller than a 1.8in HDD and at 0.6g 75x lighter. Power usage is just as incredible too since they consume a meagre 300mW (milliwatts) when active and a barely traceable 1.1mW in sleep mode.

Despite their microscopic proportions and battery swooning requirements however the P140s are baby rockets offering read and write speeds of up to 40MBps and 30MBps respectively and Intel calculates a massive 2.5 million hours mean-time between failures (MTBF) rate.

For those who shrug their shoulders and dismiss such miniature marvels on storage capacity alone note this: they are also extendible up to 16GB! Now who wants them in their next gen smartphone…?

Intel is currently sampling P140 SSDs will a full roll out expected towards the end of Q1 next year. Just in time for… 😉
