Here’s what Instagram looks like on Windows 95

A Russian designer has given popular photo-sharing app Instagram a makeover to show how it would look on Microsoft’s revolutionary Windows 95 operating system – complete with all those clunky mid-90s looks.

If the mention of Windows 95 makes you tingle with nostalgic excitement, then you’ll love what Misha Petrick has created with his Instagram for Win95 mock up. The layout is pretty much the same, but now features Window’s classic boxy and industrial grey icons to notify you about new followers or likes:

Even the photos resemble a circa 1998 pixelated web browsing session. You can also add filters which have been renamed with classic late 20th century computing terms.

The Windows 10 Anniversary update may be out, but there’s a lot I miss about the interface that had me tearing my hair out – and breathing a sigh of relief when Windows 98 was announced. If only Instagram existed back then; all you’d need to do was take the disc out of the case, insert it into your CD drive — hi-tech for those days — and follow the long and drawn out installation process. Maybe I don’t miss it so much after all…

Windows 95 was released to the public on August 24, 1995, and marked a significant improvement (especially in the graphical user interface) over earlier DOS-based Windows systems. That’s probably part of the reason why Microsoft managed to flog 40 million copies or licenses for Windows 95 within its first year on sale.
