Instagram iOS update adds grid lines, camera roll and more

A new Instagram iOS update has been launched with the major mobile app overhaul revamping the look of the photo editing and sharing tool and adding a number of new features.

The app has been updated for both iOS and Android devices, but the former gets one feature that hasn’t found its way onto Android: the iOS camera roll is now accessible right from the Instagram camera screen, making the process of adding photos the user has already shot to Instagram a lot faster (previously, the user would have to hit a button to move into the camera roll).

In both the iOS and Android updates, the camera now features (optional) rule of thirds grid lines to aid photo composition, and the cropping and scaling window also includes a permanent grid.

Also added is Foursquare integration, with location pages getting a Foursquare button that reveals info and details about the place, where available.

Instagram photos themselves are changing a little too. A new filter called Willow has been added to the line-up, and the tilt-shift effect has been tweaked so that the preview now matches the finished shot (there were some discrepancies between the two in the older version).

The update comes on the back of a strange few days for Instagram, in which the service has apparently attempted to distance itself from Twitter by removing its photos from timelines, apparently as a result of Twitter readying its own integrated, filter-equipped mobile photo sharing service for launch in the coming weeks.

The latest Instagram update is available to download now from both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.
