Instagram Goes No. 1 on App Store, Bought by Facebook

Instagram has been bought by Facebook for an astonishing $1 billion. And although you might assume that every hipster-leaning person in this half of the galaxy already has it installed, the limelight has thrust the app into the no. 1 slot on the App Store for the first time.

Instragram announced on Twitter that its iPhone app has reached the no. 1 spot of the free apps chart of the App Store. It has proved a phenomenal success across platforms, and racked-up five million downloads on Android in its first week, but this is the first time the photo app has topped the US free apps chart.Instagram

It’s all down to Facebook. The social network’s acquisition of the photo app company was announced on April 10, for a reported $1 billion in cash and stock. The Instagram app has only been around since October 2010, equating to more than a million pounds of “value” for every day of its life.

Instagram is a free photo app for iOS and Android. It lets you apply a handful of filters to your photos, to make so-so shots look dynamic or artistic. A way for people to cover up their lack of photographic talent? Sure, but it is fun to fiddle with.
“I totally Instagram’d my old car to, like, make it look really old”

Over the course of its life, Instagram has been downloaded more than 30 million times. A claimed 15 million people still use the app, which took just eight weeks to build – in its initial form. CEO and co-founder of Instagram Kevin Systrom will make a reported $400 million from the deal.
