Web 2.0 functionality and location specific searches leading the way.
Google’s customised homepage wasn’t the first on the market and it certainly won’t be the last, but it has just undergone a major overhaul which could make it even more popular.
The company has unveiled ‘iGoogle’ the new name for the verbose ‘Google Personalized (sic) Homepage’ with the emphasis being greater customisability and more self created – so called Web 2.0 – user content.
For those who already use the personalised (ah, English spelling!) homepage little is immediately noticeable since the (“newly announced”) integration of gmail, Google Galendar, Orkut and even MSN Messenger has actually been available for eons. What may tickle the fancy however is ability to create ‘templates’ which can be shared with friends and colleagues and contain extracts of writing/rants, photography and even YouTube favourites.
Also nifty is the ability to have search results based on your specific location. All a user has to do is give their address to Google Maps.
Of course all this could be potential advertising nirvana to Google as companies jostle to hit us all with more tailored promotions. Thankfully Marissa Mayer, Google VP of User Experience, says iGoogle will remain non-commercial for the foreseeable future.
