It may not be 'Watch out Nokia', but could it unsettle some of the smaller budget players?
We associate Hyundai with, well cars – and not, well, mobile phones…
This is about to change however as the company which loves putting four wheels on things (oh ok, and some monitors) has announced it will be launching its mobile phone division (we didn’t know it existed) in the UK market.
The move comes after agreements were put in place with major German, Austrian and Slovenian networks with Hyundai Mobile UK now basing itself in Oxfordshire and setting up its warehousing and logistics facility for Blighty and Ireland. Clearly a deal with one network or other is imminent.
“Hyundai is one of the five biggest car manufacturers and is ranked 72nd in the world’s most valuable brands, which is bound to provide a positive image transfer to Hyundai mobiles,” commented Norbert Winkler, the CEO of Hyundai Mobile Europe (don’t count on it Norbert, but I value your optimism).
So what will we be getting in terms of hardware to back up the rhetoric? In all honesty we don’t really know as we have these snaps (MB400, left – MB500, right) and nothing else, but they do look budget/lower midrange even if I’m not entirely sure how the model on the left is going to keep Apple’s libel hungry lawyers off its back? (Perhaps they’re too pre-occupied with the nuances of the Palm Pre’s multi-touch control).
Either way however with a raft of fairly uninspiring bargain basement Nokias, Sagems and Motorolas doing little to brighten our day perhaps Hyundai can indeed bring something to the market to inspire us…
…like putting a V8 in one.
Hyundai UK (No, I can’t find the mobile phone section either)
