HTC’s Android Handset Coming 6 May

Looks that way...

Journalists can often be accused of reading too much into things (we do it to save you from doing it) but a lot adds up in this latest announcement…

HTC has this week sent us an invite to a major event it is planning for 6 May where we are being told we shall “Witness the next wave of HTC Innovation”. Hmmmmn, May… isn’t that mid 2008 when it’s first Android handset is expected?

As you can see from the invite the company is giving virtually nothing away (other than the Applian title hint) and an address hasn’t even been confirmed at this stage. That said, if we ”aren’t” in for some Android Lovin’ (think I saw that title high up on a video store shelf once) then the less appealing prospect of Windows Mobile 6.1 products await us (HTC has always been its #1 supporter). That said, WM6.1 is already out and about so it would make little sense putting such a delay, not to mention such emphasis, on what is essentially an upgrade.

Nope, we think it’s an early sample of an Android handset (probably one of these) with a mass consumer release targeted for early in the second half of the year.

Optimism abounds…
