HTC Vive pre-orders open February 29

The HTC Vive pre-orders open on February 29, the company has confirmed.

HTC will start taking pre-orders for its virtual reality headset next month, the CEO has revealed.

Speaking to The Telegraph, HTC CEO Cher Wang revealed that the pre-orders will start on February 29, which is just over a month away.

The launch of the HTC Vive will mark a change in strategy for the company, moving away from smartphones to focus on virtual reality.

“Yes, smartphones are important, but to create a natural extension to other connected devices like wearables and virtual reality is more important,” said Wang.

The HTC Vive is the virtual reality headset that is being developed in partnership with PC gaming giant Valve, with SteamVR powering the software side of the device.

It is due to go on sale in April, as confirmed late last year, and will be in competition with rival VR headsets the Oculus Rift and PS4 exclusive PlayStation VR.

The price of the HTC Vive is still unknown however, which is especially important now the pricing for the Oculus Rift was revealed last week.

The Facebook-owned Oculus Rift headset will cost £499 here in the UK, but reports suggest the PlayStation VR might retail for even more.

HTC unveiled the latest developer kit, known as the HTC Vive Pre, during CES 2016 with a significant redesign, new features and revamped controllers.
