HTC To Provide Free WM6 Upgrades

Waves the licence for its most recent branded smartphones.

If you run own an HTC handset you could soon be receiving an (extremely) early Christmas present…

The company has announced that it will offer free updates to Windows Mobile 6 for a number of its existing smartphones with downloads for some models starting this month and others coming throughout May.

The HTC Advantage, TyTN (above), S620, P3300 and 4350 are all on the initial hit list and the company says extra models could be added in time. “We have chosen devices with a particular focus on “messaging”, where users will enjoy the greatest benefits of Windows Mobile 6,” said HTC in an official statement.

Of course most users don’t choose to purchase £400/500+ smartphones ”without” a network contract meaning most HTC devices are rebranded and customised by each network (such as the HTC Vario II or O2 XDA Cosmo). Addressing this the company dodged the bullet saying “It’s really up to the operators to decide how, or indeed whether, to offer the upgrade, so you’d need to speak to them. HTC is only directly offering upgrades for its own brand devices.”

As some consolation it did say owners of carrier branded handsets will know whether or not free upgrades to WM6 have been negotiated with HTC by June. So fingers crossed…
