Android 9 Pie is coming to at least four HTC smartphones

HTC has revealed that Android Pie will be gracing the HTC U12 Plus and HTC U11 handsets at some point in the future.

If you were looking for some kind of timeline, you’re out of luck. In fact, we don’t even have a timeline for the timeline, with HTC saying in a tweet that “timeframes for the rollout will be announced in due course”.

What we do know is that Android 9 will be coming to at least four handsets, with HTC namechecking the U12 Plus, HTC U11 Plus, U11 and HTC U11 Life smartphones.

“We can’t wait to know what you think of Google’s freshest slice of Android,” the tweet finishes, while tacitly acknowledging that the company definitely can wait.

On one level it’s good to know that HTC has acknowledged the existence of Google’s latest Android version. On another, it’s disappointing that the company hasn’t even put a vague estimate on what sort of timeline we’re talking about here.

Can we expect the update this month? This quarter? This year? If HTC knows, it’s not prepared to share the information just yet.

Not that this puts HTC in a unique position, of course. While handsets enrolled in the Android 9 Pie beta program (that includes phones from Nokia, Oppo, Sony, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi and Essential) have a definite time frame in mind (end of autumn 2018), most manufacturers have kept their figurative cards close to their equally-figurative chests.

Android 9 Pie offers a whole host of iterative features, including a slightly-changed look, gesture navigation, a new way of handling screenshots for sharing, app actions and performance tweaks. The ability to monitor your time on apps is coming soon, too.
