HTC Magic Android Phone Dated But Late

April release time frame slips.

For those of you thinking the same thing: yes, Android has stalled a bit…

This is perhaps no more evident than in news from Mobile Today which confirmed the new (and much anticipated) HTC Magic will slip from its April release schedule to 1 May.

In truth the delay isn’t the greatest shock in the world – especially as the Magic had been considered a mid/late April arrival – but we do learn a few tantalising details. Firstly, the handset is likely to carry the unnecessarily clunky extended name of ‘Magic Pioneer’. Secondly, it shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg with the phone expected to be free on most £25pm contracts and above.

Of course, despite all this we mustn’t get away from some key points. Primary, is the Magic isn’t exactly a technical tour de force (528MHz CPU, 3.2in 320 x 480 pixel display, GPS, 3.2MP camera, HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth with EDR, accelerometer, microSD card slot) but secondly, its delay highlights something more important: where on earth are all the other Android handsets?

Yes, the T-Mobile G1 did ok, but it arrived back in early November and we’re in April now. Samsung has had delays, Sony Ericsson has kept quiet, Motorola lurks in the background and now HTC’s own mediocre follow-up slips.

We love the idea of you Android, but until we see regular (and more tantalising) hardware for the moment you’re a long way off the pace…
