The HTC M7 smartphone will come with a revolutionary new kind of ‘Ultrapixel’ camera technology, according to the latest reports.
HTC’s new flagship phone will apparently come with a unique type of image sensor that will boost image quality significantly.
While the rumours up to now have suggested a 13-megapixel camera for the HTC M7, it might not be quite that simple. The new Ultrapixel sensor is reportedly composed of three 4.3-megapixel sensor layers, which combine to give a single image.
So whilst three lots of 4.3 do indeed add up to 13, the HTC M7’s camera won’t output images at that size.
The purpose of this technology is to create crisper images. Using three lots of data to represent a single final pixel should make for a far more accurate final result.
If this reminds you of a certain other cameraphone powerhouse, that’s because the principle is similar to that employed in the Nokia 808 PureView – although that device doesn’t have quite the same unconventional multi-layered structure.
It’s a technique that’s perhaps closer to that employed by Sigma in its Foveon X3 sensor, which we’ve explained previously in our digital camera tutorial.
The HTC M7 is rumoured to be a highly capable phone in other areas too, with a 4.7-inch Full HD display and a 1.7GHz quad-core processor.
None of this is known for sure, but we do at least know that the HTC M7 exists – HTC CEO Peter Chou recently appeared at the company’s end-of-year party wielding the device and proceeded to take a bunch of pictures of the audience. Evidently there’s some impressive camera tech hidden in there.
