HTC has something planned ‘for U’ on January 12

HTC’s next major product announcement will take place at an event on January 12, the Taiwanese firm has revealed.

The company has sent out teaser invites to an event, with the text “for U” placed on a blue background. The U is actually the C from the HTC logo flipped 90-degrees counter clockwise.

What HTC is hinting at here is far from clear. The timing is interesting because it falls between CES in the first week of January and MWC 2017 the following month.

It’s possible the blue background could signify the arrival of the next flagship HTC smartphone, the HTC 11, which is believed to be codenamed HTC Ocean.

However, the image above looks a little more like the sky than the ocean.

So far rumours have suggested the device will have a 5.5-inch edge-to-edge screen, QHD resolution, Snapdragon 835 processor, Quick Charge 4.0, a whopping 8GB of RAM and a 12-megapixel rear camera.

Given HTC’s traditional launch windows, announcing the HTC 11/Ocean in early February would seem somewhat premature.

With that in mind, perhaps it’s something to do with for VR or wearables. The “For U” caption certainly offers an indication the launch may have something to do with the connected self.

Either way, HTC has us intrigued. We’ll keep you posted with any further news.
