HTC Could Be Making An iPod touch Rival

There are signs that HTC could be broadening out from smartphones and tablets and taking a leaf from Apple’s book by developing a portable media player, similar to the iPod touch.

A newly-published patent application discovered by Patent Bolt, shows designs for a “handheld electronic device” but one with front mounted stereo speakers as well as two sizeable rear speakers specifically there to enhance multimedia like YouTube videos, music, movies and TV shows.

The inclusion of YouTube would mean it would have to have at least a Wi-Fi connection. According to Patent Bolt, most phone patent designs mention their cellular capabilities, such as GSM, 3G or LTE, but none of those are mentioned for this device, which would be a further clue that it’s a challenger for the iPod touch.

Because HTC works closely with Google, it’s not too much of a leap to speculate that, if it is eventually produced, it will be an Android device and well positioned to take advantage of Google Play. Google’s app market was recently renamed in a move towards more multimedia content, much like iTunes.

The patent application was first filed in 2011 and published by the US Patent and Trademark Office in March this year.
