HP reveals Spectre x360 with OLED display

As CES 2016 gets going, updates, upgrades, and refreshes to existing machines are coming in think and fast.

HP has come straight out of the gate by announcing upgrades to several of its existing laptop hybrids, including an OLED screen version of the Spectre x360.

The company also introduced a new 15.6-inch version of the x360, alongside an updated and enlarged Pavilion x2 hybrid.

A Quad HD OLED display option on the 13.3-inch Spectre x360 will be available starting in spring 2016, although it remains unclear as to whether that will be in the US only.

The 2,560 x 1,600 OLED display is thinner and decreases the weight of the device by 50 grams while providing higher colour gamut at 103% vs. 72% on WLED displays.

The convertible PC will also offer optional Intel Iris graphics and up to 1TB of SSD storage.

Battery life should also be improved by the addition of the new screen technology.

The news comes after Lenovo revealed their OLED hybrid, the ThinkPad X1 Yoga, yesterday.

HP hasn’t introduced OLED to its 15.6-inch Spectre x360 but the bigger device does offer the option of a 4K 3,840 x 2,160 touchscreen with ultra wide viewing angles of more than 8 million pixels.

Other features include the latest Intel Core i5 and i7 processors, up to 16GB of memory, and quad front-facing speakers tuned by Bang & Olufsen, all in a 16mm body.

Even at 13 inches, the Spectre x360 always felt bulky in tablet mode, so this 15-inch version could prove to be cumbersome at the very least.

Still, the addition of 4K makes the newly enlarged x360 an attractive option for media professionals.

Elsewhere, HP has upgraded its Pavilion x2 by increasing it from 10.1 inches to a larger 12.1-inches.

The new Pavilion has a 1,920 x 1,280 Full HD+ display and is 15.3mm thick.

It features 6th generation Intel Core M3 processors with 128GB or 256GB SSD storage and 4GB or 8GB of RAM.

There’s also the nice addition of a USB Type-C connector which can be used both to transfer data and charge the device.

The 15-inch x360 is expected to be available in the UK in January with a starting price of £999.99. In the US it will start at $1,150 and will be available on February 14.

The 12-inch Pavilion x2 is expected to be available in the UK in January with a starting price of £499.99. In the US it will cost $500 (£340) and will go on sale on February 7.
