HP Chromebox revealed

HP has announced its own Chromebox device, thus joining rivals Dell, Samsung, and Asus in the Chrome OS desktop PC category.

The HP Chromebox will be extremely compact, with a length and width of just 5-inches. This makes it suitable for attaching to a monitor or even carrying around with you for impromptu presentations or video calls, as well as literal desktop use.

It’s not lacking for connectivity either, with four USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port, and DisplayPort.

HP isn’t giving too much away about the internal workings of its new Chromebox, but we do know that there will be a Haswell-generation Intel Core i7 option.

The HP Chromebox’s reveal follows swiftly on the heels of Google’s own announcement of Chromebox for meetings, an initiative to push such compact Chrome OS desktops to businesses. This will bundle together a Chromebox PC, an HD camera, a mic and speaker unit, and a remote control.

“Chromebox for meetings brings together Google Hangouts and Google Apps in an easy-to-manage Chromebox, making it simpler for any company to have high-definition video meetings,” says Google.

The first device to fit this category is from Asus, but this latest effort from HP will also be part of the initiative.

There are no details yet on pricing for the HP Chromebox, but the aforementioned Asus bundle costs $999. HP will launch its Chromebox this spring (in the US at least) in a range of four bright colours.
