HomeChoice Broadens Bandwith To 8Mbps

Sky Sports channels now also available to subscribers, just in time for the new footy season.

Enemy of Freeview, NTL and Sky (which makes them pretty favourable in our opinion), HomeChoice has decided it wants to play with the big boys. 8Mbit broadband connections are on the way and the killer aspect for many of Rupert Murdock’s company: the Sky Sports channels are suddenly part of its own line up.

We can also tell you that from 1 September package prices will be dropping by around £5 across the board (excluding the entry level deals). While fans of Sky Movies (there are some apparently) will soon be able to view a selection of them through HomeChoice’s new “Sky By Wire” option.

Now clearly, this news marks the latest example of chest puffing in the sector. Just last week NTL announced it would be boosting broadband speeds to 10Mbps. The week before Sky tried (and failed) to add an Ethernet port to its upcoming high definition box without gathering attention, but we spotted it. These guys know if they don’t have high speed broadband offerings attached to their channels they’re toast, and rightly so.

Anyway, back to HomeChoice specifically, which actually provides so many services already that it is hard enough simply trying to choose what you want. For example, it has three types of channel packs: Base, Big and Max. Three types of Internet speed: 1Mbps, 2Mbps and Max Speed (around 4Mbps) and two call options: free evening and weekend or anytime. You can have any of these services individually or combined with other elements. For example the Big Pack Channels with Max Speed broadband and Anytime phone calls and they all come with different pricing.

Still, despite the mild throbbing pain this causes to get our grey matter around all these options, choice in our homes (see what I did there?!) is exactly what we what. What’s more, it is clear we’re heading towards one mighty broadband battle and, personally speaking, I can’t wait for the speed boosting flesh wounds and price cutting fatalities to get underway.
